Bumi Kita - Helping communities to rebuild their lives
When Aceh was destroyed by a tsunami in December, 2004, it was natural for us to come to the aid of the victims. We went to Aceh just after the disaster with a team of skilled volunteers, providing emergency relief - food, medicine, and psychological assistance.
As time passed, we gained the confidence of the people of Samalanga, on the East Coast, the village where we had been assigned to work. Talking with them, we identified the needs for a comprehensive reconstruction program. In April 2005, we conducted a detailed consultation with the villagers, to estimate the costs of rebuilding their houses, schools, boats and shrimp ponds.
This is how we started our community-based recovery program, which is now active in Sumatra and in Java, helping several villages on the East Coast of Aceh and in Central Java to rebuild their infrastructures, their means of living, their social life and their hopes for a better future.
This program has been supported by dozens of individual volunteers and donors, as well as sponsors like Terre des Hommes, Solidarite Indonesie and MACIF, the French Embassy, Questar and Rotary. We are still looking for support both for our emergency program in Java and our reconstruction programs. Contact us for help and donations !!!
